Rare Bird were an English progressive rock band, formed in 1969. They had more success in other European countries. They released five studio albums between 1969 and 1974. In the UK, they never charted with an album but charted with one single, the organ-based track "Sympathy", which peaked at number 27. It sold one million copies globally. The band's initial line-up was as below, although there would be changes by the time they came to work on their third album
Rare Bird – Epic Forest. Label: Red Fox Records – RF 604. Format: CD, Album, Reissue, Unofficial Release.

When they recorded their third album, Rare Bird had recently undergone some personnel changes that had a serious effect on the band's musical direction. One of the band's two keyboardists, founding member and primary songwriter Graham Field, had left, marking an end to the group's nearly unique organ-electric piano-drums-vocals lineup.
My introduction to Rare Bird is one that easily could have happened when the album came out, had I been around then, 12 years before I was born. I walked into a record shop in Brighton, in this case Across The Tracks who specialise in good quality used vinyl, and there was a song playing which pulled my head around. But Epic Forest is a high watermark in this band's lexicon, with not a weak track to be found. It's notable that Fred Kelly was consistent on drums throughout their time together - he is phenomenal. Something of a cross between Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Dave Clark, Mitch Mitchell, Ian Paice and any other quality 60s/70s drummer even tangentially related to rock music with a technical skill as well as good feel, he propels the songs along with the power and grace that they need.
