Saint Brigid of Kildare or Brigid of Ireland (Irish: Naomh Bríd; Latin: Brigida; c. 451 – 525) is one of Ireland's patron saints, along with Patrick and Columba. Irish hagiography makes her an early Irish Christian nun, abbess, and foundress of several monasteries of nuns, including that of Kildare in Ireland, which was famous and was revered. Her feast day is 1 February, which was originally a pagan festival called Imbolc, marking the beginning of spring
Life of St. Brigid: Abbess of Kildare. 0982277008 (ISBN13: 9780982277003). Lovely book for reading about Saint Brigid. I especially liked the celtic-inspired illustrations without, as these inspired some of our form-drawing work. It is geared towards a Christian-viewpoint, FYI.
Saint Brigid is especially known as an intercessor for dairymaids, cattle, travelers, scholars, midwives, fugitives, and newborn babies! Here's an interesting article of one school teacher who prays a lot! . .I have Saint Ypomoni’s icon at my office, and I ask her help almost every minute. Saint Brigid and her soulmate Darlughdach were sixth-century Irish nuns who brought art, education and spirituality to early medieval Ireland. I’d sit with the men, the women of God There by the lake of beer We’d be drinking good health forever And every drop would be a prayer. Riain also sings a heavenly Ode To Bridget on the video below and on her Celtic Soul album.
Brigit, Brigid or Bríg (/ˈbrɪdʒɪd, ˈbriːɪd/; meaning 'exalted one') was a goddess of pre-Christian Ireland. She appears in Irish mythology as a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the daughter of the Dagda and wife of Bres, with whom she had a son named Ruadán. She is associated with the spring season, fertility, healing, poetry and smithcraft.
The Holy Abbess and Wonder-worker Saint Brigid of Kildare, Ireland. St Brigid was struck by the beauty of the earth and sky in the morning light.
The most ancient life of St Brigid is by Broccan, (d. 650). Then the Second Life was composed in the 8th century by Cogitosus, a monk of Kildare. During the raids by the fierce Norsemen in the 9th century, the relics of St Brigid were taken for safety to Downpatrick, where they were interred in the tomb of St Patrick and St Columcille, and since 1190 they rest in Downpatrick Cathedral.
