Desire is the 17th studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on January 5, 1976 by Columbia Records. It is one of Dylan's most collaborative efforts, featuring the same caravan of musicians as the acclaimed Rolling Thunder Revue tours the previous year (later documented on The Bootleg Series Vol. 5). Many of the songs also featured backing vocals by Emmylou Harris and Ronee Blakley

Album · 1976 · 9 Songs. The two wrote much of what became 1976's Desire, one of Dylan's most commercially successful albums. Songs like "Hurricane," "Isis," "Joey," "Romance in Durango," and "Black Diamond Bay" took on heady narratives that proved the collaboration was an artistic success. Scarlet Rivera's violin is an integral part of the mix, with bassist Rob Stoner and drummer Howie Wyeth giving the sessions a loose but focused appeal. Emmylou Harris provided harmony and backing vocals throughout

Desire is a very special album, although Bob Dylan‘s adamantly antimusical approach keeps it from greatness. Somehow, though, Dylan’s antimusic winds up being very seductive. The real problems with this record lie in other areas. What’s most striking about the record is that it is such a collaborative effort. Dylan works as closely with these musicians and singers - among them, violinist Scarlet Rivera, bassist Rob Stoner and drummer Howard Wyeth of the Rolling Thunder crew, and vocalists Emmylou Harris and Ronee Blakley - as he has with anyone since the Band. But it’s still Dylan’s album.

And while Bob Dylan directly addresses his crumbling relationship with his wife, Sara, on the final track, Desire is hardly as personal as its predecessor, finding Dylan returning to topical songwriting and folk tales for the core of the record. It's all over the map, as far as songwriting goes, and so is it musically, capturing Dylan at the beginning of the Rolling Thunder Revue era, which was more notable for its chaos than its music.

This album has an average beat per minute of 134 BPM (slowest/fastest tempos: 97/168 BPM). See its BPM profile at the bottom of the page.
