Marc Ribot Plays Solo Guitar Works of Frantz Casseus is a 1993 album of solo guitar works by Haitian-American composer Frantz Casseus recorded by Marc Ribot and released on the Belgian label, Les Disques du Crepuscule. Ribot studied classical guitar under Casseus who fused jazz and the European classical tradition with folk music of his native Haiti. The album was recorded in New York City in 1989 and 1993, and was supervised and approved by an ailing Casséus who died the year it was released.
Frantz Casséus (1915–1993) was a Haitian-American guitarist and composer. Born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he spent most of his adult life in the United States where he immigrated in 1946 hoping to meet pianist Fats Waller. Though influenced by jazz and European classical music, Casséus's compositions maintained a focus on Haitian folk forms, which he incorporated into his recordings and his published compositions.

Marc Ribot and Frantz Casseus. Ribot, a suburban kid enthralled with the Rolling Stones, wanted to learn to play like Keith Richards. His family, who didn’t distinguish much between rock ’n’ roll and classical music, decided that Casseus was the man to train their son. Ribot remembers Casseus as a patient teacher. He understood the needs of a kid who wanted to play what he heard on the radio and was not ready to make a commitment to mastering technique.
Guitarist Alberto Mesirca worked with Marc Ribot around 2010 to bring to light a new batch of Casseus compositions that were lost at the time Ribot recorded this album. Mesirca also recorded all the material that Ribot had recorded two decades before, and he gathered all on a single compact disc titled "Haitian Suite. Mesirca happens to be a very soulful player with flawless classical technique. Ribot is certainly worth hearing on his own recording, but like Casseus himself, Ribot's classical technique is not that of a concert artist.
