Grateful Dead, Album. Dick's Picks, Vol. 12: Providence Civic June 26, 1974/Boston Garden June 28, 1974. Although many of the entries in the Grateful Dead's Dick's Picks series of archival recordings have great stories behind them, this four-disc volume bears an exceptional lineage. It seems after Keith Godchaux (keyboards) was hired in the summer of 1971, the keyboardist - who would be replacing Ron "Pigpen" McKernan - was given tapes of a recent tour by Jerry Garcia (guitar/vocals). That is until now. 35 (2005) contains the complete August 7, 1971, show at Convention Hall in San Diego, as well as the surviving fragments from the previous gig on August 6, 1971, at the Hollywood Palladium. There are also pieces from a show at the Auditorium Theatre in Chicago on August 24, 1971.

Grateful Dead Archivist Discusses Dick’s Picks Series. The shows, including those from the Providence Civic Center and Boston Garden on June 26 and 28, 1974, that were recently released as Dick’s Picks Volume 12, represent the Dead at some of their most musically lucid moments. Latvala’s career with the Dead started in the mid-Sixties, but the archivist didn’t step into the vault, so to speak, until 1985, when he more or less strong-armed Dead bassist Phil Lesh into listening to tapes from some older shows.
