4 is the fourth studio album by English rock band Black Sabbath, released in September 1972. It was the first album by Black Sabbath not produced by Rodger Bain; guitarist Tony Iommi assumed production duties. Patrick Meehan, the band's then-manager, was listed as co-producer, though his actual involvement in the album's production was minimal.
On the label the title appears as 'Black Sabbath Vol. 4'. An Excellency Production We wish to thank the great COKE-Cola Company of Los Angeles. Tom Clark's Most Recent Stories. Fantastic four-second guitar solo by a gorilla in there somewhere, right - beautiful - gorilla! The Sabs pour it on, man, it’s right near the end of the record now and here’s a great three-second drum solo by a polar bear, no shit! Put mud in my ears if I lie!
4 is the fourth studio album by Black Sabbath, released in September 1972. Snowblind was the album’s working title, but Vertigo Records executives were reluctant to release an album with such an obvious drug reference. We wrote and recorded Vol. 4 at the Record Plant in Los Angeles. LA was a real distraction for us, and that album ended up sounding a bit strange. The people who were involved with the record really didn’t have a clue.

If Black Sabbath's fourth album shows us anything, it's that even the so-called "fathers of metal" can hit a rut. Despite the reverence shown towards the record, Vol. 4 can be described as nothing more than a stale, meek offering from a tired, worn out band.
Vol. 4 is the point in Black Sabbath's career where the band's legendary drug consumption really starts to make itself felt. And it isn't just in the lyrics, most of which are about the blurry line between reality and illusion.
