Six memorable performances from 1954 find Bechet sharing the frontline with the great trumpeter Jonah Jones; their ensembles on "Chinatown, My Chinatown" are extremely exciting. The other four tracks feature Bechet with French orchestras and this version of "Roses of Picardy" is quite wonderful. Highly recommended, this is Bechet at his best in his later years.
Sidney Bechet was the undisputed king of the soprano saxophone and also one of the most innovative and original clarinetists in jazz. He brought an unequaled energy, clarity and verve to his chosen instruments, along with his trademark heavy vibrato. The blues, and the spirituals and the remembering, and the waiting and the suffering, and the looking at the sky watching the dark come down - that's all inside the music. The music, it's my whole story. Bechet started out on clarinet and later, in the early 1920s, discovered the soprano saxophone - an instrument rarely heard in jazz at that time. He mastered the rather difficult instrument, and succeeded in giving the soprano saxophone a prominent place as a solo instrument in jazz. Bechets signature style left a profound mark on the way the clarinet and the soprano saxophone are played in todays jazz.
The soprano saxophone can be compared to the B♭ clarinet, although the clarinet can play an augmented fourth lower and over a fifth higher. Due to the relatively wide bore of the soprano, it is less forgiving with respect to intonation than the lower saxophones, though an experienced player will use alternate fingerings or vary breath support, tongue position or embouchure to compensate. Professional players will use the technique of voicing to fix problems with intonation .

The soprano Saxophone has been the stepchild to its large brothers, the Alto and Tenor saxophones in jazz music. Despite a lineage that dates to the early twenties, the soprano was not widely used as a solo instrument in many early jazz recordings, with most soloists preferring the clarinet for its warmer, richer sound. The manzello is a King saxello soprano saxophone with an extended bell. Kirk made his statement on the instrument in the late sixties with his "A Handful of Fives. No list of soprano masters would be complete without the extraordinary work of the great Wayne Shorter. His legionnaire work with his band Weather Report and on his own solo efforts are trailblazingly beautiful.
