Zairian pop is a cross-cultural delight, an amalgam of traditional rhythms, imported (or repatriated) Afro-Cuban rhumbas and electric guitars used in a purely Congolese style, with skipping, syncopated lines in a quicksilver tone. Zairian pop has swept French-speaking Africa, and it is now reaching Europe and the Americas, lately via the Talking Heads' album ''Naked.
In "Sangonini", 4 Etoiles (or Les Quatre Etoiles), a group of prominent Congolese (Zaire/DRC) musicians who had since relocated to France, put together a stunning album of soukous at its very finest. I cannot praise this album highly enough. The album comprises 12 songs, spanning 74 minutes, and every one is a delight. The irresistible upbeat guitar rhythms, with lead guitarist Syran Mbenza starring, are accompanied by sparkling vocals. It is thrillingly uplifting stuff

Les Quatre Etoiles was a Soukous (the Congolese dance music of the 1980s and 1990s that was immensely popular throughout Africa and elsewhere) musical group, in existence from 1982 to 1996, consisting of the Paris-based Congolese musicians Bopol Mansiamina (bass and rhythm guitar), Wuta Mayi (vocals), Syran Mbenza (lead guitar) and Nyboma (vocals) . album was recorded in late December 1982, and included one song by each of the four musicians. When the group formed, each of its four members was a well-known and prolific musician. During its existence, each continued to release solo records, often supported by other members of Les Quatre Etoiles, and to play with other bands.
