The Retur. (full title The Return of the Darkness and Evil) is the second studio album by Swedish extreme metal band Bathory. It was released on vinyl on 27 May 1985, through Combat Records in the US. The Retur. had a significant influence on the then-emerging death metal and black metal genres. Quorthon explained the album title as such: "We wanted people to just read out The Retur. – as in a second album or a follow-up – and then flip the album over to look for a tracking list

Only after listening through the album to the end would you get the full title of the album: THE RETURN OF THE DARKNESS AND EVIL. Trivia: "Born for Burning" was one of the very first original Bathory songs ever written, although initially its title was Live in Sin (. Live and Die in Sin ). It had different lyrics and was played at slower tempo in the early days. In CD reissues beginning from 1991 the last 26 seconds of "The Return of Darkness and Evil" is made into a separate track, an untitled outro. Recording information: Recorded and mixed at Electra.

While THE RETURN OF THE DARKNESS AND EVIL album was being shipped out to shops around the world, for the now two-piece BATHORY line-up there were still some ideas worth trying out untill a third album could be recorded. Saturday June the 1st 1985, Quorthon was back at Heavenshore with drummer Stefan for initially a weekend of work. The intention was to try out some ideas. With no bass player tied to the band at the time, Quorthon would again resume the role of bass player. He had already played bass on half of the material on THE RETURN OF THE DARKNESS AND EVIL, but did not own a bass.
