Starker’s first cello teacher was Fritz Teller. After a few months, his parents decided to take him to Teller’s teacher Adolph Schiffer; Schiffer had been David Popper’s student and succeeded him at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music where Starker studied. In 1931 Starker’s mother took him to his first concert in which Pablo Casals played. Shiffer introduced the young Starker to Maestro Casals and mentioned his talent. Casals kissed him on the check and his fate was sealed

Kodály's Sonata for solo cello of 1915 is perhaps the first major work for unaccompanied cello after Bach's six great suites of almost 200 years earlier. Since becoming a professor of composition at Budapest's Royal Academy of Music in 1908, most of his compositions had been chamber works for strings; the Cello Sonata is perhaps the most ambitious of the early string works.

The Hungarian composer Zoltán Kodály wrote his Sonata in B minor for solo cello, Op. 8, in 1915. It was first performed in 1918 and published in 1921. It is among the most significant works for solo cello written since Johann Sebastian Bach's Cello Suites. It contains influences of Debussy and Bartók, as well as the inflections and nuances of Hungarian folk music.

Two key aspects of Zoltán Kodály’s groundbreaking Solo Cello Sonata sit side by side: its ambitious extension of the instrument’s tonal properties (facilitated in part by selected retuning) and its use of material that sounds like daily musical bread for Hungarian peasants. János Starker famously toured the piece worldwide, claiming that it paid for his backyard swimming pool, and his various recordings of the work – the earliest of which admitted some textual cuts – still take some beating.
