Starting out as simply The Pips in 1952, derived from a cousin's nickname, the founding members were Gladys Knight, brother Merald "Bubba" Knight, sister Brenda Knight and cousins Eleanor and William Guest.

Sample this album Artist (Sample). Listening to this CD was fantastic. But there are only 10 songs. A very funny Sat night live skit comes to mind with The Pips & a mike minus Gladys Knight. The Pips perform the backup lyrics & then the camera goes to a mike & no Gladys.

However, the album leaves off almost as many essential tracks as it includes - the omissions of "Midnight Train to Georgia," "I Feel a Song (In My Heart)," and "The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me" are particularly glaring. Both the Ultimate Collection and, particularly, the Essential Collection feature more of Gladys Knight & the Pips' best material, but The Millennium Collection does provide a decent overview of the group's body of work for the most casual fans.
