Songs by Claus and Stearns included surreal elements that simultaneously evoke Appalachian imagery and the alienated perspective British and American indie rock bands of the 1980s. Their second album, "Gravity Dance (1991)," threw the musical balance greatly over to the rock sensibility. Claus's "Sally Ann," later re-recorded by Natalie Merchant, retains the band's connection to Appalachian balladry, while Stearns' "I Need a Plastic Bag (to Keep My Brains In)" and Claus's "Life Is a Rubber Rope" are more nearly "New. The Horseflies: Human Fly You can tell these sardonic folkies have big plans because they've come up with a slogan: "neoprimitive bug music," which definitely beats "the Ithaca sound. Overimpressed with Philip Glass, bluegrass, or both, they utilize lots of repetition. Very hypnotic, or strophic, or static. They are often large and agile in flight, and the females bite animals, including humans, to obtain blood. They prefer to fly in sunlight, avoiding dark and shady areas, and are inactive at night. They are found all over the world except for some islands and the polar regions (Hawaii, Greenland, Iceland)

Even with this song, The Horseflies do not play it straight, for a childhood rhyme is thrown in seamlessly and to great effect. The Horse Flies were an extremely talented and musically adventurous outfit that put out several studio albums and a couple of live ones as well.
