Rafael Leon René (March 30, 1927 – November 25, 2007), known as Googie René, was an American musician, bandleader, and songwriter. He was born in Los Angeles, the son of songwriter and record producer Leon René, and acquired the nickname "Googie" as a child. He graduated from Dorsey High School in Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles, studied piano, and began writing songs and working in his father's recording studio
Googie Rene's "Romesville" is what was known a few years back as "Space-Age Bachelor Pad Music". A kind of swinging cocktail lounge groove with a jazz twist. Serenade In The Night" is the old 1930s tune played here with a cha-cha beat. The only other tune I recognized was "Come Back To Sorento". There is a little spoken vocal on a couple of tracks (more Maynard G. Krebbs than Jack Kerouac) and it's great fun. "Tales Of Manhattan: The Cool Philosophy Of Babs Gonzalez" is a different kettle of fish. Very enjoyable exotica music. I did like Romesville by Googie Rene better than Tales of Manhatten by Babs Gonzales, mainly because of the spoken songs. Not that it isn't enjoyable, they are great stories, just not my cup of tea (so to speak). One person found this helpful.
US bandleader Googie Rene also spent time as an A&R man, producer and director. He was responsible for starting Bobby Day's career. Aliases: Rafael Rene. In Groups: Googie And The Continentals, Googie Rene And His Band, Googie René And Orchestra, Googie Rene Combo. Variations: Viewing All Googie Rene. Googie René And Babs Gonzales - From Romesville To Manhattan (CD, Comp, RE). Righteous.

Compared to Krebs' caricatured verse, the hipster-speak tales Babs Gonzales spun to light cool jazz backing on Tales of Manhattan: The Cool Philosophy of Babs Gonzales were gritty and streetwise. Heard these days, when we know just how on-the-edge some New York beats were, it sounds a little innocuous and contrived. One CD reissue pairs the album with an unrelated Googie Rene album from the same era, Romesville, whose commercial mix of jazz, Latin music, and cinematic soundtrack music makes for a good if slightly incongruous companion piece. A limited but enthusiastic singer, Babs Gonzales did what he could to popularize bop. He had brief stints with Charlie Barnet and Lionel Hampton, and then led his own group (Three Bips & a Bop) during 1946-1949.

Rafael Leon "Googie" René was one of the more colorful and overlooked West Coast R&B artists of the 1950s and '60s. René's songwriter and band-leader father, Leon, and singer-songwriter Bobby Day formed Class Records in Hollywood at the dawn of the 1950s. Rene worked in the production end of the label. In 1956, René, who played jazz and jump-blues piano, began writing and recording singles for Class as the Googie René Combo and Googie René Band.
