Black Irish is McNally’s most personal project yet, which is saying a lot, given the Americana singer-songwriter’s deep catalog. But it speaks to the power of connection, and the power of music to create it and to reflect it. The kick off track You Made Me Feel For You, was written by her producer, Americana icon, Rodney Crowell, and serves as a metaphor for their collaboration - how his particular understanding of her unique gifts pulled out the career-defining album many have been waiting for since she came on the scene.
Black Irish was born of personal pain. Its songs were birthed as McNally was caring for her terminally ill mother, going through a painful divorce, and raising her daughter alone. Years earlier she'd met Rodney Crowell (who was introduced to her work through producer John Leventhal) when he was auditioning singers. The pair became e-mail correspondents. For his part, after their initial encounter, Crowell felt compelled to "shepherd" her next album into being. Lucky for him, she agreed.
Shannon Maureen McNally (born March 17, 1973) is an American singer and songwriter. McNally was born in Hempstead, New York, on Long Island. While studying anthropology at Franklin and Marshall College, she began singing and playing guitar in clubs.
2017 release, Shannon McNally's blues-Americana return, Black Irish will make you dance, break your heart, and save your soul. The album was recorded in Nashville, but it's distinctive sense of place lies 210 miles west, where Memphis meets Mississippi. The primary colors of American music are black and white, and Black Irish displays that hybrid in many shades, mixing country, blues, soul, rock, folk balladry and classic pop. Black Irish sounds like the culmination of you being in full charge of how you want to present yourself sonically. Shannon McNally: Yeah, I think that’s right. Every record I’ve made is an honest representation of me, and the time I was in while I made it. I’m pretty self-possessed that way, even during the times I’ve been challenged creatively. And I really do hope people take the time to listen to the whole Black Irish record on vinyl. I like the album format, and I do like the way people are embracing vinyl records more now. The album is a valid medium, and I’m going to insist on continuing to make full albums, even in our singles-driven market. As artists, we do have to play by the rules of whatever the games are and keep up with what everybody wants, but it’s also up to us to insist on keeping the album format valid.
