20 Years of Jethro Tull is a 1988 boxed set which spans the first twenty years of Jethro Tull. It was issued as five LPs: Radio Archives, Rare Tracks, Flawed Gems, Other Sides of Tull, and The Essential Tull. It was simultaneously released as both a 3CD and a 3-cassette set, titled 20 Years of Jethro Tull: The Definitive Collection. All three versions were housed in a 12x12inch cardboard-box, with 24-page booklet, the CD and cassette versions having a black plastic tray.

Noted iconoclast Ian Anderson - Jethro Tull’s flute-playing main man and madman - left no stone unturned and avoided obvious choices. He’s collected twenty-three live cuts, nineteen studio outtakes and twenty-three previously issued recordings, fifteen of them rare B sides and whatnot. Obviously, The Essential Tull is something of a misnomer, since only one Tull standard, Bungle in the Jungle, appears as it did in its original release. By weight and volume, 20 Years of Jethro Tull is cumbersome.
Though this is a pretty good academic overview, there aren't any great revelations here, and only hardcore fans need to invest in this multi-disc set. Even the curious fan that wants a bit more than Aqualung or hits will find this satisfactory.

It consists of interviews with fans, record company executives and frontman Ian Anderson giving a rough chronology of the band, interspersed with clips from music videos and live performances. Many of the live performances are culled from the Madison Square Garden performance during the 1978 Heavy Horses tour.Total running time: appr 80 min.
