Dizzy Gillespie's final recording, taken from a month he spent featured at the Blue Note in New York, matches the aging giant with such fellow trumpeters as Jon Faddis, Wynton Marsalis, Claudio Roditi, Wallace Roney, Red Rodney, Charlie Sepulveda and the ancient - but still brilliant - Doc Cheatham (who cuts both Diz and Faddis on "Mood Indigo"). Although Gillespie was no longer up to the competition, the love that these fellow trumpeters had for him (and some fine solos) makes this historic CD worth getting.

To Bird with Love: Live at the Blue Note was taken from a month that Dizzy Gillespie was featured at the Blue Note in New York, virtually at the end of his playing career, the 74-year-old trumpeter is quite erratic on this set of bop standards. However, his supporting cast (heard from in different combinations) includes such major players as altoists Jackie McLean, Antonio Hart and Paquito D'Rivera and tenors Benny Golson, Clifford Jordan and David Sanchez, in addition to a strong trio led by pianist Danílo Perez. The good spirits and obvious love that these musicians had for Gillespie make up for his technical lapses.

The album, along with To Bird with Love and Bird Songs: The Final Recordings, represent the last recordings made by the trumpeter before his death in 1993.

Live album by Dizzy Gillespie. January 25, 1992 Blue Note Jazz Club, Greenwich Village, New York City. Along with Bird Songs: The Final Recordings and To Diz with Love the album represents the final recordings by the trumpet legend. Albums of recorded music were developed in the early 20th century, first as books of individual 78rpm records, vinyl LPs are still issued, though in the 21st century album sales have mostly focused on compact disc and MP3 formats. The audio cassette was a format used from the late 1970s through to the 1990s alongside vinyl, an album may be recorded in a recording studio, in a concert venue, at home, in the field, or a mix of places. Recording may take a few hours to years to complete, usually in several takes with different parts recorded separately.

Dizzy Gillespie and his Rebop Six, which included Parker, started an extended gig at Billy Berg's club in Los Angeles in December 1945. In the late 1940s, Gillespie was also involved in the movement called Afro-Cuban music, bringing Afro-Latin American music and elements to greater prominence in jazz and even pop music, particularly salsa. Dizzy Gillespie (1917 to 1993) and His Big Band were fabulous, and this is a great recording! Chano Pozo is featured. This album first appeared on LP in the mid to late 1950's. It's a recording of a live concert by GIllespie's big band at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium sometime in the late 1940's, probably 1948. The original album cover claims the record received the Grand Prix award from France's Jazz Hot magazine. Is it really that good? Let's just say I purchased this album as a kid back in 1958 and pretty much wore out the grooves
