Stand Up is the second studio album by the British rock band Jethro Tull, released in 1969. He was replaced by guitarist Martin Barre, who appeared on every Jethro Tull album from this point onwards.
Even the conventions of stand-up itself get no respect from Cross, who mock-apologizes to the audience for not telling any jokes, then makes it up to them by doing impressions of a crack baby and Stephen Hawking with a prostitute. You could not ask for a better time capsule of late-Nineties alt-comedy. Long before she was hosting Oscar broadcasts or holding court on The View, Whoopi Goldberg was wowing audiences on the Great White Way with a one-woman show (directed by none other than Mike Nichols).
On his only comedy album, 1961's An Evening with Me, Knotts delivers his riotous "Weatherman" routine, which he would also famously perform on The Steve Allen Show. His television co-star and great friend had the chops to be a stand-up comedian, too. Photo: Netflix and PBS. Seven months into 2018 and there’s been enough stand-up specials streaming across nonlinear platforms to hold us over until next year. But it’s hard to be jaded about the quantity when the quality has been this good. From the structurally traditional to the thematically experimental, down to the half-hour and quarter-hour sets that defy the arbitrarily determined Golden Hour act time, these are the best stand-up specials of the year so far. Stand-up comedy can be divisive. It’s tough not just to rank comedy specials, but even to recommend them.
Virtually every Tull fan agrees Stand Up is a bona-fide classic. Not much more needs to be said there. This lp is probably their best in my opinion because it's their heaviest with strong rhythm guitar throughout most of the lp that makes tracks like 'New Day Yesterday, 'Back To The Family' and 'For A Thousand Mothers' some of the best songs they ever did. The live gig is great again because of Martin Barre's heavy power chording (in my opinon, the live rendition of 'My God' blows away the lame studio version on Aqualung). The album blended hard-hitting rock with exotic sounds performed with mandolins, balalaikas, and tablas. Bluesy passages, then I was transported to old India. An echoey resonance, like the sounds in a woods after a rain shower, gave a sylvan sheen to the music.
