Feels is known for its unconventional guitar sounds, which were obtained in part by the unique tuning the band used.

Like Animal Collective's previous full length, Feels is sequenced carefully, with jauntier, tuneful numbers leading to an amorphous back half. The two transitional songs in the record's middle, "Bees" and "Banshee Beat", are among the best things Animal Collective has done. Bees" imagines how a drifting pop song might sound inside the sonic universe of an Alice Coltrane album, with a trebly autoharp that is all strings and no body and sustained clusters of piano that bring to mind an ascension through clouds. The upbeat "Turn Into Something" brings the album back to where it started. Feels is an excellent record, one that, despite a more conventional approach, happens to get better over time. But it's also interesting to contemplate as a chapter in the Animal Collective story. If the childhood pals can stay friends and continue to inspire each other we may have some more great records down the road.

Feels" is, in my opinion, Animal Collective's best. Listeners will embark on a trippy musical voyage with this one. Some of the tracks seem a bit slow at first, but they improve with subsequent listens. Overall, this records has a bouncy tone that reminds me of childhood mixed with psychedelic drugs. Recording Feels is known for its interesting guitar sounds, which were obtained in part by the unique tuning the band used. All the songs on Feels are tuned to our friends piano which was out of tune to begin with. Dave and I made loops from recordings of him playing her piano and we used those loops in the early songwriting process for feels. So since those loops are premade and can't be tuned, the guitars have to be tuned to the loops. it's not out of tune in any tradional whole step/half step kind of wa. e're talking microtonally out of tune after years of not being professionally tuned and subtle natural detuning.
