Don Cherry with Dollar Brand. Live recording (Universal Silence) from November 1972 at Berlin Philharmonic. Is that a young hcherryofficial sitting with the ukulele- near the mic’d up sleeping dog or just in profile singing on the front? Want to hear that show (October 16 ‘72, Donauschingen) if it is. Thanks to dohm for this, out on. Abdullah Ibrahim (aka Dollar Brand) will be performing in various locations around the world later this year. London, Kyoto, and Berlin included.

The Dollar Brand Trio (with Johnny Gertze on bass and Makaya Ntshoko on drums) subsequently played at many European festivals, as well as on radio and television. The pair produced a third album in 1974, titled Underground in Africa, in which Ibrahim abandoned his financially unsuccessful folk-infused jazz of the previous albums. Instead, the new album was a fusion of jazz, rock music, and South Africa popular music, and sold well. While recording Underground, Ibrahim collaborated with Oswietie, a local band of which Robbie Jansen and Basil Coetzee were saxophonists, and who played a large role in creating the album's fusion style. With Don Cherry (trumpet), Carlos Ward (alto sax), Talib Rhynie (alto sax, oboe), Hamiet Blueitt (baritone sax, clarinet), Johnny Dyani (bass), Ed Blackwell and Roy Brooks (drums), John Betsch and Claude Jones (percussion).

Here, in this clip from a 1984 concert in Poland, he plays two of his compelling compositions, Water from the Ancient Well and The Wedding, with one of his most empathetic collaborators, alto saxophonist Carlos Ward. Also check out this story about the day Abdullah Ibhrahim met Thelonious Monk.

Carlos Ward (born May 1, 1940 in Ancón, Panama) is a jazz alto saxophonist and flautist. He had a long-lasting association with Don Cherry: from The Third World (also with Abdullah Ibrahim) through his appearance as featured soloist on the 1973 recording of Cherry's Relativity Suite to the band Nu during the 1980s and beyond.

By the early 1970s, trumpeter Don Cherry had moved a long way-geographically and musically-from the music that had earned him a reputation as one of free jazz's great innovators. Bra Joe from Kilimanjaro" by Dollar Brand is a prolonged trumpet solo from Cherry accompanied by the youth orchestra and Temiz. Organic Music Society will probably appeal most to Don Cherry devotees and completists.
