Birth Control never repeated the experiment of Backdoor Possibilities again, but you can't be too surprised, the latter-half of the '70s weren't as so friendly to prog (and Gentle Giant was starting to record more straightforward material starting with The Missing Piece), not to mention the album did alienate many listeners (since this was so untypical for the band, go listen to Hoodoo Man, and then this album, you might find it hard to believe this is the same band, really it's only Bernd Noske and Bruno Frenzel that had anything in common with those two albums).

Backdoor Possibilities" was BIRTH CONTROL's 6th album and followed the masterpiece "Plastic People" which has been oft overlooked. Backdoor Possibilities" is an excellent concept based on a story about a corporate businessman who is trapped by his own success and who ultimately reflects on his life before meeting death in a subway. On Backdoor Possibilities from 1976 Birth Control explores little bit further on their sound coming with some jazzier elements in their symphonic/heavy prog atmosphere. This is an extravagant album, musicaly speaking, lots of instrumental passages, very well performed, some of them even brilliant like on The farrockaway ropedancer.

Backdoor Possibilities emerges as a rather fragmented and patchy concept album about a businessman who becomes trapped in an elevator with death himself, who, in turn, tries to convince the man that life is more important than schedules and the blandness of everyday ordinance. With 14 tracks that mostly fall under the five-minute range, Birth Control's main story line loses its grasp quickly, but the music itself almost instantly takes over and blurs the band's allegorical idea, replacing it with detours of jazz- and rock-styled excursions. Although a few of the songs are a minor diversity, Backdoor Possibilities still ingrains the root of Birth Control's progressive sound, and the relevance of the album's concept really isn't missed.
