A I A : Alien Observer by Grouper, released 11 April 2011 1. Moon Is Sharp 2. Alien Observer 3. Vapor Trails 4. She Loves Me That Way 5. Mary, On The Wall 6. Come Softly . .mkschmidt I just encountered Grouper for the first time and I was immediately intrigued by the beautiful ambient sound of this record. I love the strange rhythms, and the lyrics are evoking some strong nostalgia.

A I A: Alien Observer is the seventh studio album by Grouper, the stage name of American musician Liz Harris. It is the second of her two-part album series A I A, released on April 11, 2011 on Yellow Electric. A I A: Alien Observer, along with A I A: Dream Loss, received an honorable mention on Pitchfork's list of the best albums of 2011. In 2016, Pitchfork ranked Alien Observer at number 21 on its list of the 50 best ambient albums of all time. All tracks written by Liz Harris.

Album · 2011 · 6 Songs. Ethereal, spectral, and absolutely gorgeous, AIA: Alien Observer was easily one of 2011's finest releases. Yet what genre do we stick this woozy and slowly evolving stuff into? Is it experimental or alternative rock? It’s hard to find an act as purely interested in experimentation and melody with equal measure. No matter what you’re doing when you first hear music by Liz Harris (. Grouper), after a few minutes it’s hard to not find yourself doing nothing but listening.

Anyway, great release as well as the others by Liz. Reply Notify me 1 Helpful. Are there any differences between first-second-third pressings?

Grouper is always haunting and mysterious, but AIA: Alien Observer feels out of this world. The hushed harmonies sound like creatures from another planet trying to connect through an aesthetic. I like to listen to this album while wearing a sheet and running around the house like a ghost. 93. This is what I think spiritually transcending to another realm would sound like.

The title track does away with the drone and puts Harris' vocal over a quivering keyboard line. But placed on a continuum, these records highlight how 2008's luminous Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill, her last full-length album, was an unusual entry in the Grouper catalog. That record was built almost exclusively with acoustic guitar and voice, and the songs had an ancient air to them, like they'd been carved into petrified wood with a hammer and chisel.

If anyone is selling a reasonably priced copy of this record please let me know. Would love to have the physical version.

I would really appreciate a repress too, with one of dream loss as well.
Cerana
Repress this beaut. The cover adds £100 to the value already lmao
Xurad
Indeed a repress of this one of a kind beauty as well as Dream Loss would be most appreciated.

I gave "Alien Observer" 3 stars just because of "Dream Loss" awesomness. Anyway, great release as well as the others by Liz.

Are there any differences between first-second-third pressings?
Joony
Mine hasn't roman numbers. Means it is first pressing, isn't?
Pooker
If you mean is the material product [vinyl and inserts] the same across the pressings then the answer is yes. If you want to identify a pressing and its number its easy to do this by looking at the bottom right hand corner you will see a partial moon sign and roman numbers III will indicate the third pressing.

as posted on her blog, there will be another reprint of A.I.A. in the fall of 2012. wouldn't spend much on the album at the moment and rather wait.

Or maybe rocks on the edge of a river. Or maybe one large rock with pits and falls and curves and sections of lakewater collected in pools. The sky was dark grey, and the horizon was an ending. We were climbing over the rocks late on a Saturday afternoon, as we often did. He climbed up a portion of the rocks and into a hollowed out area with golden light inside. To do this, he had to climb over a tall stack of old glass bottles and glass rocks—also illuminated by the light—which were situated at a kind of entrance to this place. Once he got in, he was crouched down and doing something. I tried to follow, but I was afraid I’d topple over the bottles and glass rocks. I couldn’t step around and over them like he did. So I decided to take the wall apart in order to get through. Each bottle and glass rock was illuminated by the light of this place. Some were green, clear, blue and a few were red.

Both of the A / A lp's have just been given a repress as "exact repro second editions" and are available at Volcanic Tongue at the time of this posting (but won't last long I wouldn't have thought).

I am almost positive there are still copies floating around record stores in Portland, try Mississippi and Exiled records. I'm sure somewhere else is also carrying them

A wonderful album full of fragile beauty and a delicate sense of melancholy and longing. Liz Harris has a rare talent for evoking these emotions in the most vaporous, subtle way, without ever gliding into dull and obvious territory. Next to her timeless classic "Cover the windows and the walls", this is her most accomplished and heartfelt work. A must for all those who relish peaceful solitude and introspective, emotive journeys.By the way: This album will be repressed as long as there is demand. There's really no need for buying an over-priced Copy.

That's funny. It seems as if I own the represses.
Utchanat
They were pretty much planning reissues from the start, 3000 copies were ordered originally and only 1000 were made. The original issue WAS limited to 1000 but that in no way means there were no plans for a repress. In fact it was repressed a few weeks ago, and have you not noticed every one of her albums has been reissued at least once.
Ffan
So where do I buy a reasonably priced copy?
Malhala
I don't know where you got your info about the repressing of the two "A I A" lps, but, as it is written in the notes, these albums ARE limited to a 1000 copies and WILL NOT be repressed. This statement was made by Liz herself when those were released on her own label; you can already verify this: those are already out of stock to the point that there's not even one copy on sale on discogs for this one and one overpriced copy left of the other one...
