The album is a watershed for several reasons. It is the first regular Temptations studio LP to feature Dennis Edwards as the replacement for David Ruffin, who was fired in June 1968. In addition, it marks the beginning of the Temptations' four-year delve into psychedelia recording, at the behest of producer Norman Whitfield, in a fusion genre referred to as "psychedelic soul. The album went to number four on the Billboard Pop Albums Chart and the group received their first Grammy Award in 1969.

Formed in 1960 in Detroit, Michigan under the name The Elgins (not to be confused with the other Motown act with the same name), they changed their name to The Temptations before being signed at Motown in 1962. The first Motown recording act to win a Grammy Award, over the course of their career, they have released four Billboard Hot 100 singles and fourteen R&B singles, making them one of the most successful groups in music history. 1990 is a 1973 album by The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label, their final LP written and produced by Norman Whitfield. The Temptations remained dissatisfied with Whitfield's "slave-driver" like production mentality and his tendency to overshadow the Temptations' contributions to their own records by emphasising his production techniques and creating extended instrumental tracks with only a few verses of vocals. Group leader Otis Williams complained to Motown chief Berry Gordy, who replaced Whitfield with Jeffrey Bowen for their next LP, 1975's A Song for You.
