When the casting is first-rate, so is Haitink - and when the casting is second-rate, so is Haitink. In this 1989 recording of Wagner's Das Rheingold, the casting is thankfully as good as it got for the time. With the powerful James Morris as Wotan, the majestic Marjana Lipovsek as Fricka, the supple Heinz Zednik as Loge, and especially the baleful Theo Adam as Alberich, Haitink's cast is colorful and characterful and the ensemble is effective and dramatic. In return, Haitink and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks support them with an accompaniment that illustrates and illuminates the meaning of the situation on-stage.
