Give 'Em Enough Rope is the second studio album by the English punk rock band the Clash. It was released on 10 November 1978 through CBS Records. It was their first album released in the United States, preceding the . version of The Clash. The album was well received by critics and fans, peaking at number two in the United Kingdom Albums Chart, and number 128 in the Billboard 200.
Give’ Em Enough Rope, their second album (The Clash, released in the . in 1977, remains unissued here, as do several remarkable singles that appear on neither LP), is a rocker’s assault on the Real World in the grand tradition of Beggar’s Banquet, Let It Bleed and Never Mind the Bollocks, Here’s the Sex Pistols
Although Give ‘Em Enough Rope doesn’t pack quite the punch or purpose of the band’s debut, Safe European Home, Tommy Gun, and Drug-Stabbing Time show a growing synergy in the songwriting partnership between Joe Strummer and Mick Jones. The rollicking R&B of Julie’s Been Working For the Drug Squad presages the stylistic breakthrough of London Calling, while English Civil War offers the band’s punk audience one last furious anthem. Produced by Blue Oyster Cult guru Sandy Pearlman, the Clash’s sophomore album was a conscious attempt to give the band a more commercial sound. Although Give ‘Em Enough Rope doesn’t pack quite the punch or purpose of the band’s debut, Safe European Home, Tommy Gun, and Drug-Stabbing Time show a growing synergy in the songwriting partnership between Joe Strummer and Mick Jones.
The teaming was quite controversial within the punk community, and the sound of Give 'Em Enough Rope is considerably cleaner, yet the more direct sound hardly tamed the Clash. While the record doesn't burn with the same intense, amateurish energy of The Clash, it does have a big, forceful sound that is nearly as powerful. What keeps Give 'Em Enough Rope from being a classic is its slightly inconsistent material.
The accepted wisdom on Give Em Enough Rope is that CBS brought in a big-name American producer – a guy from one of those dinosaur rock bands they so despised – in an attempt to turn them into Journey or Toto. In fact, producer Sandy Pearlman was no real big name. Before The Clash, he’d produced his band of outlaw weirdos Blue Oyster Cult, a Mahavishnu Orchestra live album, the first three albums by The Dictators and a Pavlov’s Dog record.

A very strong follow up the the first album and probably the last great Clash album that is what you could consider punk.
As The Clash’s second album hits middle age, Getintothis‘ Roy Bayfield looks at its story and legacy. In the middle of 1978, two years after The Clash had formed, the NME ran a cover filled with the face of Mick Jones, a potent image of the guitarist staring straight at the reader, face framed with shaggy hair, simultaneously defiant and vulnerable. The picture was captioned, in the style of a typed police charge sheet, ‘JONES, MICHAEL Age: 23 Occupation: Guitarist in a bloody good rock band’. The cover was calculated to stop readers in their tracks.
Give 'em Enough Rope was generally welcomed by critics and was designated/won distinctive awards.
