About McDermott's 2 Hours. Though they only released one album and dissolved in the late 80s, this Brighton, Sussex, England bands single recording, The Enemy Within, remains much prized among folk fans and has been widely bootlegged. An indicator of the esteem in which it is held was confirmed when the Levellers included one of its tracks, Dirty Davey, as the only non-original composition on Levelling The Land. The song, born in a pub session in Brighton, relayed the true story of an acquaintance who hanged himself while in police custody.

McDermott’s Two Hours release of Besieged marks the end of nearly 30 years of music-making – or as they like to put it ‘not so much a final curtain as a magnificent encore. It’s hard to disagree. Both the Besieged set and the bonus Anticlockwise disc showcase the group’s energetic approach to what might best be described as melodic punk-folk. Heraclitus once asked that if the handle and then the head of an axe were replaced would it be the same axe? A similar question could be asked of McDermott’s Two Hours. It’s an approach that serves the songs on offer well. McDermott’s Two Hours have often been compared to The Pogues. The overlaps are obvious: both groups emerged at around the same time and both welded the DIY ethos and energy of the punk era to the instrumentation, arrangements and history of Irish traditional music.
Levellers & Oysterband – Besieged (2019)
The folk-rock band McDermott's Two Hours was formed in Brighton in 1986 from the remnants of two other bands, The Bliffs and The Crack, and featured a vigorous line-up of vocals, fiddles, whistles, bouzouki, acoustic and electric guitars, drums and bass. Front man Nick Burbridge named the band after Tommy McDermott, who gained notoriety for his two-hour piece on Radio Free Derry, calling for peace and love during the Derry riots.
