SURFER GIRL - Beach Boys released September 1963. The year was 1963, and the Surfing craze was in full swing". The Beach Boys had released a grand total of two LP's prior to this release - Surfin' Safari (1962) and Surfin' . 1963) - all of which had charted the Billboard Top 100. At the time, the name 'Beach Boys' was closely related to fast paced surfing songs, so the idea of a slow ballad would be considered a somewhat risky move. Surfer Girl' weaved into one album all that the Beach Boys had sung about prior to its release (Surfing, Cars, and Girls). As the album finished it's 56 week run on the charts, peaking at Brian felt that it was time for a change in tune. The next album, 'Little Deuce Coupe' would be a giant step into the Hot Rod genre, presumably influenced by Wilson's good friend, and long-time writing partner, Gary Usher.
