Red House Painters was an alternative rock band from San Francisco, CA, United States, formed in 1989 by singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek, who is currently active in the band Sun Kil Moon, with part of the original RHP line-up. The band is described, along with Low and American Music Club, as one of the linchpins of the slowcore movement in alternative rock.

Retrospective is a 2-disc compilation of Red House Painters' songs from the band's 4AD era. The compilation was released in July 1999. Disc one is a collection of definitive Red House Painters tracks culled from their debut album Down Colorful Hill through 1995's Ocean Beach, as picked by 4AD label owner Ivo Watts-Russell. Disc two, subtitled Demos, Outtakes, Live (1989-1995), is a collection of unreleased demos and live recordings from their 4AD years. The essay inside the booklet was written by Rob O'Condor in April 1999.

Red House Painters (also known as Bridge or Red House Painters II to distinguish it from the first eponymous album, also known as Rollercoaster or Red House Painters I) is the third album by the group Red House Painters, released on October 18, 1993 by 4AD. The album is made up of songs from the same recording sessions for Rollercoaster. At the beginning of the album opener "Evil," the faint laughter of Mark Kozelek and the barely audible voice of a woman playfully saying "No" can be heard.

Sounds great, but side B has the same as side A on it. Not happy

Anyone noticed the annoying noise/feedback in New Jersey? Weird. I've cleaned it a few times but i keep on hearing it. Not sure if its from the recording..A few scuffs and dust! Tight sleeves. Argh but so far i'm fine with it since i can't afford OG pressing.
Anararius
No problems here. Dead silent after a couple runs, incredible sound. Records removed and stored in poly, no scuffs to report.

Some songs are just as noisy as the Down Colorful Hill-reissue :( Sad to hear many people experienced the same problem. The paper sleeve seem to have caused a lot of scratches on my copy. Don't know if it's the material of the sleeve or something else that is the cause of this...
Cala
Sounds like a half and half issue. My sleeves were fine, no wear on the discs. Record pressing was very quiet, no clicks or hiss at all.
Dugor
Does anyone know how many copies were pressed?
Anarahuginn
paper sleeves are so tight it's dangerous
Arador
Good sounding reissue. Had to clean it extensively, but after that no crackling. Packaging is minimal, in keeping with the original pressing and CD copies. Solid reissue of one of my favourite albums.

Have both the original and this re-issue, and this is a very poor attempt, however to be honest, it is also an inexpensive record. The original has more thicker inner sleeves, and the image of the rollercoaster on the front is sharper than the one on the reissue, which looks like it was simply taken from the cd booklet and enlarged. The original pressing is also better sounding, and the vinyl is heavier. And yes, you're correct in needing to clean the records before playing. Something that I don't expect when buying new vinyl.

First reissue in 15 years, and it's pretty poorly packaged considering the price tag. Mine came in with scuffs, bits of packaging grinded up inside, and the LP was slotted in the wrong way (almost dropped the LP trying to take it out). If you wanted a more grandiose reissue, you already missed it with the 6xLP box set, which was a RSD release and is no longer in print.
SmEsH
The only thing more grandiose about the box set version is that it comes on copper vinyl, otherwise it is the exact same.
Datrim
Pretty terrible reissue. Bad quality sleeve. Barebones as all hell. Only if you want the record really badly and nothing more.

I'd have to agree with the consensus here. My copy is very poor with extensive crackle on Side 2 of Record 1. This crackle remains despite Ultra Sonic Cleaning on the Klaudio Vinyl Cleaner. There are lots of scuff marks too, more is the pity, because this is a really good album. Why on earth do they make inner sleeves so impossibly tight?? Is this to annoy purchasers? I can't think of any other reason apart from cheapskating. We shouldn't be surprised though because these LPs were pressed by GZ Vinyl in the Czech Republic which is notorious for producing shoddy vinyl. GZ, can however, produce good vinyl LPs, when the price is right, apparently. Ironically, this is a very good sounding reissue but the pressing quality is well below acceptable on a good number of copies, including my own.Can anybody tell me who reissued/pressed the 'Songs for a Blue Guitar' vinyl? JPC says 'Island' so I am hoping that maybe somebody decent like Optimal in Germany was contracted for the pressing job on that one. 4AD did a lousy job on these reissues and there is no excuse because everybody in the vinyl business knows that GZ Vinyl is the worst plant .. ever.
