Some Friendly is the debut album by British alternative rock band The Charlatans, released in 1990. Recorded at The Windings near Wrexham, Wales in 1990, the sessions proved somewhat fraught - the band fell out with the owners of the studio; "it was one of those studio bust-ups. Rob and Martin were up to their old tricks, smashing stuff up and that" said singer Tim Burgess later.

This album is seriously fun, it’s steeped in the pop neo psychedelic sound that came out in the mid 1980’s, challenging the gloom and doom rock of groups like The Sisters of Mercy and Joy Division. the music layered and textured, bright as any ray of sun, something that the world needed when Some Friendly was released. But I'm making this album sound weak, and it’s not, it's a very strong record with well defined boundaries and thoughtful lyrics

Some Friendly, the debut from the Charlatans, is actually a very good, although somewhat slightly dated, album. Released in 1990, it contains two of their best ever songs, The Only One I Know and Sproston Green. Sproston Green in particular is just wonderful, with a haunting melody line played underneath the vocals. The Charlatans UK were one of the preeminent bands to come out of London's Madchester scene, and their debut album, Some Friendly, shows signs of what the band would become on later albums. Taken as a whole, Some Friendly is a scattershot album that shows promise. On one hand, it is the album that introduced the dance scene to the Charlatans with their monster early & hit "The Only One I Know. Opportunity" is a standout, with its spacey, atmospheric feel, as is "Then," which is driven by its strong bassline. However, the high moments are too few.

Then Some Friendly, the group's debut, planted itself at the top of the UK charts; while the rest of the '90s were up-and-down for the band, this album set the band on its way. Drawing on Blunt's background in mod and psych outfits, Collins' outrageously funky keyboards and Burgess' unexpected star quality - even if his voice wasn't the strongest - Some Friendly is just that, a friendly and fun vibe. Some of the lyrics betray Burgess' sharp-tongued punk background - "You're Not Very Well," the opener, expresses anything but sunny sentiments.

what an under-rated pop rock album this is, from 1990, not as good as the stone roses debut, which is the sort of sound it has, only with the organ sound which you assosiate with the charlatains, and not as good as the 2 fantastic albums they made in the mid to late 90s albums 'Telling Stories' or 'Us and Us. Only', but it does stand up as the best album besides those two, with Sponston Green and the cult classic The Only one I know
