Carlos Gardel (born Charles Romuald Gardès; 11 December 1890 – 24 June 1935) was a French Argentine singer, songwriter, composer and actor, and the most prominent figure in the history of tango. Gardel's baritone voice and the dramatic phrasing of his lyrics made miniature masterpieces of his hundreds of three-minute tango recordings. Together with lyricist and long-time collaborator Alfredo Le Pera, Gardel wrote several classic tangos.

Carlos Gardel was the charismatic and handsome godfather of the Tango. Born in 1890 to a poor family in France, they emigrated to Buenos Aires, Argentina, when he was a toddler. A natural singer blessed with a booming baritone voice, Gardel began singing popular and folkloric tunes in duet and trio groups. In 1912, he made his first recordings, but several years later his life changed after he was shot - the bullet lodged in his lung, where it would remain throughout his life. When he returned to performing after his convalescence, he began singing interpretations of Tango works.
