Ben Allison: Action-Refraction by AAJ Italy Staff, published on June 6, 2011. Title: Action-Refraction Year Released: 2011 Record Label: Palmetto Records.
Bassist Ben Allison's latest album is a collection of covers, or interpretations, of others' songs; only one is a jazz standard (Thelonious Monk's "Jackie-Ing"), and that's barely recognizable as such. Action-Refraction isn't a straight jazz album, but it's more likely to appeal to young jazz listeners than to indie rock fans, though it offers pleasures for anyone with open ears.
On Action-Refraction, due out April 12, Ben Allison covers an eclectic set of songs by everyone from Thelonious Monk to The Carpenters. Greg Aiello/Courtesy of the artist. Ben Allison Action-Refraction Palmetto Records. Combining seemingly unrelated genres or interpreting songs in an unusual way is nothing new or groundbreaking, but bassist Ben Allison’s new release, Action- Refraction, is full of musical oxymorons that blur the line between alt-rock, jazz, and even classical music. Allison established his name as a composer with his previous albums, which contained mostly original material done in his unique and sometimes quirky style. For this release, he decided to take a collection of tunes that have inspired him over the years and turn them on their head
