Pretenders is the debut studio album by British-American band The Pretenders, released on 7 January 1980 under Real Records in the UK, and Sire Records in the United States. A combination of rock, punk and pop music, this album made the band famous. The album features the singles "Stop Your Sobbing", "Kid" and "Brass in Pocket". Nick Lowe produced the Pretenders' first single, "Stop Your Sobbing", but decided not to work with them again as he thought the band was "not going anywhere".

The Pretenders burst on the scene in the early '80s with one of the most compelling presentations of rock & roll ever seen. This collection, which highlights their A and B sides up until the mid-'80s, shows that Chrissie Hynde and co-conspirators were true masters of the rock single. Tracks such as "Brass in Pocket," "Middle of the Road," and the highly underrated "Message of Love" are spectacularly performed, written, and produced

Pretenders are an English-American rock band formed in Hereford, England, in March 1978, emerging from the British post punk movement. The band evolved into a mainly four-piece outfit and has experienced numerous personnel changes, with Chrissie Hynde as the only consistent member. Original member Martin Chambers returned after an absence of several years.

The Pretenders' second album, Pretenders II, was released in August 1981 to follow-up success, preceded by the EP "Extended Play" in the United States in recognition of the demand for their material. By June 1982 bassist Farndon was fired because of his drug abuse and, two days later, guitarist Honeyman-Scott died of a drug related heart attack; Farndon himself died in April 1983 as a result of drug abuse. The album was not released in UK and Europe until June 2009 when it was released as a double album with a compilation album of hit songs, titled The Best of, Break Up the Concrete. The double-album package peaked at 35 in the UK, returning them to the UK Top 40 for the first time since 2000's Greatest Hits The Pretenders also appear on the UK Singles Chart for their appearance on the 1997 Fever Pitch The EP for which their cover of "Goin' Back" is listed.

When the Pretenders came roaring out of the gate in 1979 with their first singles and album, Chrissie Hynde the lead vocalist, songwriter and rhythm guitarist suddenly found herself the focus of critics and fans with her piericingly direct and honest songs. What's more Hynde combined the melodic touch of someone like Ray Davies (she later became involved with The Kinks' Davies)with songs that celebrated women, sex and the joys of life. The tragic story-including the loss of two founding members after the second album was released-is pretty well known. The second album here corrects a mistake form the Rhino release which was missing the marvelous instrumental b-side "In The Sticks" written by drummer Martin Chambers is included. What You Gonna Do About It" recorded for a flexidisc is included from the "Pirate Radio" boxed set.

Of course, it helps that Chrissie Hynde is arguably the most emotionally compelling female pop vocalist of the second half of the 20th century. But The Singles also proves something that's too often overlooked: that Hynde is the first distaff rocker whose songwriting can stand comparison with the genre's biggest guns. The Pretenders' debut album was such a powerful, monumental record that its sequel was bound to be a bit of a disappointment, and Pretenders II is. Essentially, this album is an unabashed sequel, offering more of the same sound, attitude, and swagger, including titles that seem like rips on their predecessors and another Ray Davies cover.

Pretenders II included the Extended Play singles, the MTV video success "Day After Day", and popular album-radio tracks "The Adultress", "Birds of Paradise", "Bad Boys Get Spanked", and "The English Roses". On 18 September 1981 the Pretenders were the musical guest on the US late night sketch comedy show Fridays. The band performed "The Adulteress", "Message of Love" and "Louie, Louie" Farndon's drug abuse escalated and he was fired after.
