Liszt: A Faust Symphony. This was produced to be the first great digital recording of Liszt 's A Faust Symphony, but for all its opulent tone and polished ensemble, this 1983 recording by Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra fell short. Its grandiloquence transforms Goethe 's hero into a braggart and a blowhard, and its simplistic grasp of form turns Mephistopheles and Faust's concluding spiritual battle into a Saturday night bar brawl and a Sunday morning church service. Most of Muti 's central movement depicting Gretchen is singularly lacking in sensitivity. However, the opening for solo.
