The surprise jewel on this second disc was the Ode to Napoleon recited by Thomas Allen - one can imagine it as a classical forerunner to rap music. I was particularly taken by how Schoenberg's harmonies could reach such moving climaxes in each of the works on this CD. If you want to expose yourself to these composers to help develop an appreciation for their work, this is an excellent CD to obtain.

Arnold Schoenberg or Schönberg (/ˈʃɜːrnbɜːrɡ/, US also /ˈʃoʊn-/; German: (listen); 13 September 1874 – 13 July 1951) was an Austrian, and later American, composer, music theorist, teacher, writer, and painter. He is widely considered one of the most important and influential composers of the 20th century. He was associated with the expressionist movement in German poetry and art, and leader of the Second Viennese School.

Even the toughest piece (the Ode to Napoleon), with Thomas Allen’s sturdy rendition of Byron’s poem, will sustain the interest of all but the most wool-dyed anti-modernist; and since it’s basically a piano quintet with voice it makes an intriguing foil to Shostakovich’s Quintet .
