A chronicle of a tragic fire that occurred at New York City's Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in 1911. On March 25, 1911, the Triangle Shirtwaist Company factory in New York City burned, killing 145 workers.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Fire. About a century ago, a disastrous fire in lower Manhattan took away the lives of 146 garment workers, who were about to leave for the day after work. The cause of the accident has never been known, and all we had was, loss of precious lives and safety precautions for the future.

At the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in Manhattan, somewhere around 4:30 . on Saturday, March 25, 1911, a fire began on the eighth floor. What started the fire has never been determined, but theories include that a cigarette butt was thrown into one of the scrap bins or there was a spark from a machine or faulty electrical wiring. Most on the eighth floor of the factory building escaped, and a phone call to the tenth floor led to most of those workers evacuating. The fire escape was not strong enough for the weight of those on it. It twisted and collapsed; 24 died falling from it, and it was not of use to any others trying to escape. Thousands of spectators gathered in the park and streets, watching the fire and then the horror of those jumping.

Waist was a common term in the United States for the bodice of a dress or for a blouse or woman's shirt from the early 19th century through the Edwardian period. A shirtwaist was originally a separate blouse constructed like a shirt; . of shirting fabric with turnover collar and cuffs and a front button closure.

The fire department arrived quickly, but their ladders only reached the sixth floor, missing the fire by two floors. The water pressure was also not powerful enough to reach up to the flames. Desperate employees jumped from the top floors trying to reach out and grab the rungs of the fire truck ladders; only to plummet to their death. I knew about the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory tragedy, but you really turned this story into something very relevant today. We forget how hard our forefathers fought for their right to work in a safe place for a fair deal. Thanks for the article!

This is before the fire. 146 employees of the Triangle Shirtwaist Company were dead the night of March 25, 1911. Improved SafetyMany of the workers died because of unsafe conditions, like the doors being locked, a malfunctioning fire escape, and a lack of water sources. Improved Working ConditionsThe fire, led to laws being made that ensured workers got fair pay and hours, that children were limited in the amount of work they could do, and workers had ways to address their complaints. The Triangle Shirtwaist fire made the people recognize the hazards of working in factories.
