Experience Hendrix: The Best of Jimi Hendrix is a compilation album of Jimi Hendrix songs released in 1997. The single compact disc collects 20 songs spanning his career from his first recordings with the Jimi Hendrix Experience in 1966 to his last with Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell in 1970. It is the first comprehensive collection of Hendrix's songs overseen by Experience Hendrix, a family company that took over management of his recording legacy in 1997.

What Hendrix means by the titular Axis in Axis: Bold as Love (the name of the album) we’ll probably never know, but what unspoken beauty is conveyed, even if nobody’s quite sure what that beauty means, exactly. Bold as Love begins with a sharp anger, then rides the exquisite, reflective trills of the verses, ending with anthemic guitars carried aloft a mighty musical crescendo, but not before a memorable, phantasmagoric five-second flanged fill from Mitch Mitchell. Little Wing is one of Hendrix’s best-loved songs, but this rendering live at the Royal Albert Hall in 1969 trounces the studio version. The vocals are more tender, the improvised outro is exquisite, and even the groaning open note dragged by a whammy bar mid-solo takes your breath away.
It is the first comprehensive collection of Hendrix's songs overseen by Experience Hendrix, a family company that took over management of his recording legacy in 1997. Fifteen songs with the Experience are included and five with Hendrix's later groups, often referred to as Gypsy Suns and Rainbows and the Cry of Love touring band
Experience Hendrix brings together the major singles with a stack of majestic album tracks and the career-defining live Woodstock version of "The Star Spangled Banner" on a fat 20-tracker. While best used as a sampler to direct new listeners to the immortal Are You Experienced, Electric Ladyland, and so on, the CD (which supplants the short-lived Ultimate Experience collection) does hang together as a listen.

There are a couple of discrepancies between the producer credits listed for each individual track and a collective listing of producers on page 22 of the booklet. Chas Chandler and Jimi Hendrix are both credited as producers of track 5 on page 8 but Jimi Hendrix is credited as the sole producer on page 22. (Chas Chandler abandoned production of Track 5 partway through recording and then Jimi Hendrix finished the production, so this credit is open to interpretation). Chas Chandler is listed as the sole producer of track 7 on page 10 whereas Jimi Hendrix is given sole credit on page 22. (Chas Chandler has been consistently credited for the sole production on this track, so the information on page 22 is probably wrong)
