It is located about 15 km (9 mi) east of Fukui in Fukui Prefecture, Japan. The temple complex was founded in the 13th century by Dōgen who brought Sōtō Zen from China to Japan.

Eiheiji is the head temple of the Soto Zen school. At any time of the year, there are more than 200 unsui or Zen Buddhist monks in training, in the temple.
