The Greatest Hits is the first compilation album by Cheap Trick. It contains many of Cheap Trick's popular songs, as well as a previously unreleased cover version of The Beatles' "Magical Mystery Tour," which according to the liner notes, was an outtake from the Lap of Luxury album.
Authorized Greatest Hits. This is an "authorized" greatest hits collection in the sense that the band picked the selections themselves. It's preferable to the 1991 Greatest Hits comp for its slightly greater length (16 songs) and better choice of material; the single version of "Southern Girls" makes it on this time around, for instance.
Authorized Greatest Hits improves upon earlier best-of packages by combining familiar singles with live cuts and the band’s theme song for That ‘70s Show. At their finest, these Tricksters toss off hard-pop confections that mix sweetness with a sarcastic aftertaste. A yeasty mix of glam-boys and goofballs, Cheap Trick turned their eccentricities into big success in the late ‘70s.
Cheap Trick sound more garage-band here than they do again until Budokan (and the never released bootlegged Steve Albini re-recording of In Color).
