Jesus Christ Superstar is a 1970 rock opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice. The album musical is a musical dramatisation of the last week of the life of Jesus Christ, beginning with his entry into Jerusalem and ending with the Crucifixion. It was originally banned by the BBC on grounds of being "sacrilegious". By 1983, the album had sold over 7 million copies worldwide.

Jesus Christ Superstar: The Soundtrack Album. The thing is, Jesus Christ Superstar was first introduced as a two-disc rock opera, not unlike the Who's Tommy, as it even scored several Top 40 hits. While no set matches the original, it's still hard to go wrong with the music, no matter what the source. This also includes the pretty "Could We Start Again, Please," composed for the stage version, and sung here by the original LP's Mary Magdalene, Yvonne Elliman. Still, even with these reservations about the sound quality, I strongly recommend this version. I decided against any of the later versions, though they also have their adherents.

Originally conceived as a double-album project by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber back in the days of vinyl albums, the original version was a huge success, leading to stage shows and eventually this, the original motion picture soundtrack version of Webber's original score. The score is conducted here by André Previn with cast vocal support by Ted Neeley, Yvonne Elliman, and Carl Anderson. Fans of Webber's over-the-top glitz will not be disappointed in this version, as the soundtrack was the perfect opportunity to milk the score for all it was visually and musically worth.
