Brilliant blues pianist, drummer and founder of the London Jazz Big Band. The jazz pianist – and occasional drummer – Stan Greig, who has died aged 82 after suffering from Parkinson's disease, performed with such leading lights of British traditional and mainstream jazz as Sandy Brown, Ken Colyer, Humphrey Lyttelton and George Melly. He was renowned for his conviviality, his brilliant blues and boogie piano playing, and his professional skills as a piano tuner. Greig was born in the Edinburgh suburb of Joppa, the son of a piano tuner and repairer
Big Band Bossa Nova is a 1962 album by saxophonist Stan Getz with the Gary McFarland Orchestra. The album was arranged and conducted by Gary McFarland and produced by Creed Taylor for Verve Records. This was Stan's second bossa nova album for Verve following Jazz Samba, his very successful collaboration with guitarist Charlie Byrd. The music was recorded at the CBS 30th Street Studio in New York City on August 27 and 28, 1962.
Greig's father was a drummer and piano tuner. Greig played with Sandy Brown while still in high school in 1945, then played piano and drums with him from 1948 to 1954. He played with Turner again briefly before becoming a member of Acker Bilk's Paramount Jazz Band from 1960 to 1968. He played with Dave Shepherd and Johnny Hawksworth as a sideman in the early 1970s, then formed the London Jazz Big Band in 1975. From 1977-80 he played with George Melly, then toured as a bandleader in Europe (1980–82). He worked again with Lyttelton from 1985 to 1995, and worked with Wally Fawkes later in the 1990s.
