Sir Neville Marriner not only partakes of this tradition: he suffers nothing by comparison. Indeed, there is a meridian feel to this performance. Marriner was rightly considered to be a leading Mozartian; here, he's at the zenith of his powers. The woodwind of the ASMF, as they were at the time, were always more lustrous than the strings: how they shine in this performance (and please note: a double bass, as stipulated by Mozart, is deployed rather than a silly contra-bassoon)  . I believe that Mozart wrote most of it and that what I love most in it (most of it) is his. The Dr. Jeckyll Marriner of k361 and the Brymer/Black et al k297b was only temporarily derailed by a Mr. Hyde who was "just trying to help". 2 people found this helpful.
