The six Cello Suites, BWV 1007-1012, are suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach. They are some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions ever written for cello. Bach most likely composed them during the period 1717–23, when he served as Kapellmeister in Köthen. Recorded with a pair of Brüel & Kjaer microphones by Yves-Bernard André in the castle of Grignan (Drôme) on Suites 1, 2, and 6, and the castle of Maison-Laffitte (Yvellines) for Suites 3, 4, and 5. Played on a cello made in 1696 by Joseph Guarneri. "The especially careful engraving and pressing of this recording permits a thorough appreciation of Wolfgang Boettcher's passionate interpretation.... the reproduction is so accurate that, in addition to the movements of the fingers on the fingerboard, one can sometimes hear the scraping of the bow against the strings..."
