Så nära att det till slut flåsar dig i nacken, som en iskall smekning tar sig mörkret in i din kropp för att långsamt bryta ner din själ och ditt psyke. Inuti din nu stadigt förmultnande hjärna finns intet hopp kvar, bara den djupaste av förtvivlan. Så länge du har förståndet kvar vill säga.Personal frustration has always been one of the most creative source of inspiration for artists, not matter what genre or artSå beskriver skivbolaget Cold Meat Industry Broken, och jag kan inte annat än hålla med. Självkart kan musik och konst skapas på annat sätt också, men det finns något alldeles säreget i det som skapas i ren dödsångest. Letum är ett enmansprojekt signerat Mattias Henriksson och jag är den första att erkänna, Broken skrämmer skiten ur mig. Jag vill verkligen inte lyssna på det här, det får mig att må psykiskt dåligt. Men ändå vrider jag upp volymen för att sedan dra upp benen mot hakan och kura upp mig längst väggen i ena hörnet av rummet. Blicken tomt stirrandes ut i ett mörkt ingenting.Det här är inte musik, det är knappt det är noise, det här är genuin sinnessjukdom fångad på skiva. Tänk er soundtracket till skapelser som Silent Hill eller Resident Evil, utan att för den sakens skull vara just ett soundtrack. Istället är det den osynliga skräck som ständigt går vid din sida då du upplever dessa världar. Metalliska oljud varvas med korpar som kraxar och dova synthomlindade körer. Det blåser och det ylar, det viskas och kyrkklockor klämtar i bakgrunden. Någon gång bryter ett lågmält gutturalt mässande igenom den annars panikartade ljudbilden.Broken är inte en skiva man sätter på utan anledning. För min egen del kommer jag aldrig någonsin mer att sätta på den, om det inte vore så att jag någon dag skulle stå på ruinens brant med alla jag någonsin älskat, döda, av min egen hand, framför mina fötter och min enda utväg går genom mynningen på ett avsågat hagelgevär. Men då är allt ändå redan för sent.

Ich gebe es zu: Es ist nun schon ein wenig her, seit sich mit „Broken“ ein Lebenszeichen von LETUM ans Tageslicht wagte – obgleich man in Anbetracht dieser Klänge vielleicht nicht unbedingt von Tageslicht sprechen möchte. Dennoch ist es nicht zu spät, einen Blick auf diese Silberscheibe zu werfen, und wenn man sich mit „Entrance to Salvation“ an die Debütveröffentlichung des Schweden MATHIAS HENRIKSSON aus dem Jahr 2001 erinnert und den COLD MEAT-Faktor hinzuaddiert, ahnt man, dass man es mit recht großer Wahrscheinlichkeit mit Ambient zu tun bekommen wird.Das ist soweit korrekt. Allerdings kann man im Fall LETUMs, im Gegensatz zu anderen Projekten auf diesem Sektor, die sich mit bemerkenswerter Kontinuität darin üben, jahraus und jahrein Klänge – und ganze Alben - zu produzieren, die nur eingefleischte Fans voneinander zu unterscheiden vermögen (Achtung, diese schöne Formulierung ist ein Zitat frei nach, ich leihe sie mir an dieser Stelle aus.), durchaus von einer musikalischen Weiterentwicklung sprechen. Auch hier wird der Dark Ambient nicht neu erfunden, doch soweit es LETUM betrifft, hat sich etwas verändert: Düsterer und verstörender als „Entrance to Salvation“ ist „Broken“ geworden. Zu Sphären- und Orgelklängen sind Störungs- und Verzerrungsfelder hinzugekommen. Neben Kirchenglocken und Effekte, die an die Geräuschkulisse so manchen alten Gruselfilms erinnern, treten noisige Elemente. Heller, sakraler Frauengesang trifft auf heiser-verzerrte männliche Sprechparts, Kühle auf Aggression – denn genau das ist es: „Broken“ wirkt erstaunlich aggressiv, ist nicht um Krachelemente verlegen und verlässt die Gefilde der reinen – und oftmals doch etwas unspektakulären – Sphärenklänge. Ein Hauch von Grabesstimmung, Orgeln, dumpfe Choräle, sakrale, andächtige, zornige und düstere Momente wechseln einander ab. Musik, die, in Teilen, unwillkürlich an gotische Architektur denken lässt (ich kann mir nicht helfen) – um gleich darauf wieder durch Verzerrungen und teilweise fast krachige Stellen gebrochen zu werden. Eine Mischung aus Melancholie, Finsternis und Aggression. Oder: ein düsterambientes Spukschloss mit jemandem, der ein Gerät zur Tonverzerrung hinter der Orgel versteckt hat. Ein Schloss, in dessen Keller mindestens ein Höllenschlund versteckt ist. Und nebenan scheint sich ein Friedhof zu befinden. Einiges an Zeit ist vergangen zwischen HENRIKSSONs Debüt im Jahre 2001 und dem Erscheinen von „Broken“ Ende letzten Jahres. Zeit, in der, man kann es vermuten, einiges passiert ist. Die Stücke der „Broken“ entstanden im Laufe dieser Jahre, und es sind nicht die Stücke eines Themenalbums – es sei denn, man möchte die Umsetzung persönlicher Gefühle und Geisteszustände als ein generelles Thema betrachten. „The use of more “heavier” distorted sounds than on the first album came naturally. This was for expressing chaos, disappointment and frustration correctly and I am quite fond of combining beauty with evil, calm with chaos. Not all songs are based on these expressions though, there are some songs that also should express sadness and maybe even something powerful”, erklärt MATHIAS HENRIKSSON. Während “Entrance to Salvation” für ihn noch einen Schimmer der Hoffnung enthielt, ist dieser auf „Broken“ gänzlich verloren. Was bleibt ist „simply therapy for a broken mind“.Und genau das macht den Reiz aus: die Entwicklung, die Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Veröffentlichungen festzustellen, diesen Verlust der Hoffnung recht konsequent vertont zu hören. Eine spannende Mischung aus Finsternis, Aggressivität und Melancholie, ein Wechselspiel in der Reichheit ihrer Facetten. Klangvoll, ein wenig filmmusikhaft, vielschichtig – und aus diesem Grund aus der Flut der einander manchmal einander recht ähnlichen Dark Ambient-Veröffentlichungen angenehm herausstechend. Im letzten Track wird es sogar überraschend auf eine klagende und melancholische Weise recht folkig. Ein beeindruckendes Stück, das zum Abschluss eine Zusammenballung von kummervoller Intensität erreicht. Ein grandioser Ausklang für ein gelungenes Werk. Claudia K. für nonpop.de

Letum – BrokenNovember 15, 2006 by MvGBroken is the second album by Letum. As before you are served dark ambient sounds with a very spatial feeling. Orchestral beauty and gloomy moods are passing over like clouds and spilled out over you as waves.With music like this there is only one good way to top truely experience it, and that is to lie down and do nothing else as listen to it. When focusing on the music Letum’s work has the power to take you away to another world. Now you just gotta love this! While it's been quite a while since Letum's last release (five years!), this new album is definitely worth the wait. The previous album, The Entrance to Salvation, was more on the safe side. On Broken, Letum lets loose the reins a little and allows their music to reach out into other realms. While you still have the beautiful and haunting dark ambient with choral pieces, you now mix in some harsher styled industrial as well. What was a project I liked before has become one I love now. Letum takes you on a roller coaster of a journey. Lulling you. Exciting you. And raking you over the coals. Take a little Raison d'être, a little Parca Pace, and a little In Slaughter Natives, and Letum is what you'll have. While not quite in the same league as the before-mentioned bands, Letum is no let-down. This is high quality music that is very worthy of the Cold Meat label. The soundscapes here are eerie, atmospheric, demented, and downright sad and depressing at times. My wife even commented that some of it sounded demonic. While I won't quite agree with her there, this is some haunting stuff at times. Letum has returned, and Letum has succeeded in crafting a wonderful piece of art! Letum - _Broken_(Cold Meat Industry, 2006)by: Quentin Kalis (9.5 out of 10)Cold Meat Industry may have released dodgy Mortiis CDs in their salad days, but as of late those CDs that fall roughly under the ambient umbrella tend to verge towards the mouth droppingly brilliant. Atrium Carceri, Desiderii Marginis, Raison d'Être, Beyond Sensory Perception... a considerable and intimidating pantheon, which now has a new member.Although Letum can be considered as ambient, they incorporate harsh white noise to a far greater extent than any of the others mentioned above, perhaps comparable in that respect to Mz.412's latest. As if the mere presence of white noise weren't sufficiently abrasive, it is frequently distorted further to maximise aural stress. Yet the overall effect is merely to increase the creeping sense of unease that Letum excel at. There are naturally more serene moments, where strong use of organs, chants and church bells provides a spiritual edge and a paradoxically cathartic dimension.
