Since March 1980, the Tallis Scholars have recorded on their own label, Gimell Records, established by Peter Phillips and Steve Smith. The label was named after the compositional technique gymel. Jedes Vokalensemble weiß was es bedeutet, ein Weihnachtsprogramm vorzubereiten. Das gilt auch für The Tallis Scholars, nur dass wir in den letzten 15 Jahren jeden Winter in den USA – in denselben Orten – Weihnachtskonzerte gegeben haben. Da wir uns nicht wiederholen wollten, ist so allmählich ein ansehnliches Repertoire von entsprechender Musik entstanden: Mittelalterliche Weihnachtslieder, deutsche Choralaussetzungen, vollständige polyphone Messvertonungen, die auf weihnachtlichen Themen basieren sowie Motetten, die Maria und Joseph gewidmet sind. Die erste CD setzt sich aus den Werken unserer „Christmas Carols and Motets -Aufnahme zusammen, in der das mittelalterliche Weihnachtslied neben polyphoneren Werken eine besondere Rolle spielt.

Christmas Carols and Motets" offers a welcome and high quality divergence from the standard muzak carols. Anyone who appreciates Renaissance or Baroque music will find this CD most satisfying. Much of our rich holiday musical history is lost in the stultifying repetition of our standard carols. All of these are sung in their original forms, without 'modern' arrangements, and culminate in three versions of the 'COVENTRY CAROL', which includes Byrd's 'LULLABY'(a truly beautiful work performed often by countertenors).
