The Charlie Parker Quintet Live! featuring Bud Powell & Fats Navarro". Recorded at Birdland, May 15 & 16, 1950. The rhythm section on the last three tracks are unknown, but is believed to include Tommy and Roy Haynes. However, Fats is barely heard on it, and plays very very few solos. One can only surmise that Fats was sadly junk sick and near the end of his life here, and although Bird was kind enough to put him on the gig, knowning of both his humility and greatness, Fats barely had the strength to play on this date.

This is a list of Charlie Parker's recordings. Parker recorded extensively for three labels: Savoy, Dial, and Verve. His work with these labels has been chronicled in box sets. Charlie Parker's Savoy and Dial Sessions have been issued on The Complete Savoy Sessions, Charlie Parker on Dial and Complete Charlie Parker on Dial and The Complete Savoy & Dial Master Takes.

Rare live material from Charlie Parker – recorded in the very familiar territory of the Birdland nightclub, but not issued until an LP release from the 70s! The material originally was broadcast on radio, but through the series of the Rose transcription disc archive – which meant better recording and preservation than most other radio material of the bop years – helping to make this album a real treasure among Bird fans in the years after his death. This album stands alone in its greatness as the only available recording of Bird and Fats playing together. However, Fats is barely heard on it, and plays very very few solos. One can only surmise that Fats was sadly junk sick and near the end of his life here, and although Bird was kind enough to put him on the gig, knowning of both his humility and greatness, Fats barely had the strength to play on this date. Its really sad, but the few instances here when Fats does blow, he still wails. A must for any lover of the music of Fats Navarro, one of the greatest trumpet players who ever walked the earth.

This evaluation of Fats Navarro, "Fats barely had the strength to play on this date," is quite misleading. For another evaluation: "Although his [Navarro's] overall recording output is relatively meager, there is a wonderful live recording, 'One Night at Birdland,' made in the famed New York nightclub during late 1949 or early 1950, featuring a quintet with Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and Navarro." (http://www.wsws.org/en/articles/1999/12/fav-d30.html ) Or from AllMusic: "The all-star lineup clearly inspired each other, making this two-fer well worth searching for."
