Of all the songs on Eddy Grant's Walking on Sunshine album, the unlikeliest contender for pop hit had to be "Living on the Front Line. The toughest track of the batch, it's a powerful shout of defiance, set to a taut, throbbing beat, and filled with lyrics that pull no punches. The song turned out to be one of the most memorable dance songs of the decade, and is arguably one of the most potent hybrids ever composed. The song soared up the British chart, finally stopping at number 11, giving Grant his first solo hit. It was reissued in 1983, as a quick follow-up to the smash "Electric Avenue," and moved into the bottom reaches of the Top 50. A 12" mix was even more dance-friendly, while a ferocious version appears on 1981's Live at Notting Hill double album. There it boasted a more ska-ified beat, acknowledging the rise of Two Tone, while its searing guitar solos give full roar to the fury of the song.
