When Paul Flaherty and Bill Nace collaborate on anything, the result is often - if not always - staggeringly poignant, and Broken Staircase, their latest offering with vocalist Laila Salins, is no exception. The sound that was mastered with Flaherty and Nace’s outrageous An Airless Field in 2010 is now expanded with complements of an additional dimension of vocal improvisation, and all elements unsurprisingly function harmoniously as cooperative (yet enraged) vehicles in a unified stream of consciousness, rather than divided units tossed about in the same car crash. A perfect example of this can be heard in the ear-splitting track, Axis Shift. The album closes with the most reflective track, Blistered Thoughts, which features Nace’s guitar fuzz-grind assuming the foreground, as Flaherty and Salins take turns in accompaniment.
Sax supremo Paul Flaherty is probably best known for his collaborations with Chris Corsano, but here he teams up with Corsano's Vampire Belt bandmate Bill Nace . The three pieces on this disc are titled 'Sex', 'Drugs' and 'Lavender', accumulating a heightening sense of noisy gravitas as the album progresses. The comparatively tranquil opener lasts just three minutes or so, and from there on durations grow exponentially, eventually arriving at the epic, endurance marathon 'Lavender', a forty minute voyage, which in its more furious moments finds Flaherty arriving at a bad Donald Duck impersonation, caught between streams of feedback and rhythmic, plank-spanking obliteration.
Paul Flaherty (born November 6, 1948, Hartford, Connecticut) is an American jazz saxophonist who plays primarily in free improvisational idioms. Flaherty began playing saxophone at age 10, focusing initially on alto sax, though he would later perform on tenor and soprano saxophone as well. He worked in the bands of John Ciffirelli and Gordon Cohen in the early 1970s, but received negative responses to his style, and instead began self-releasing albums. His first album as a leader was issued in 1978, and in the 1980s he played jazz part-time, working as a house painter. New York Nuts and Boston Baked Beans with Greg Kelley, C.
