The artwork was created by Metallica collaborator Pushead. Prior to recording, bassist Jason Newsted left the band, which resulted in Bob Rock playing the bass guitar on the album

Metallica’s controversial 8th studio album. The change in sound from the past Load and Reload albums was caused due to bassist Jason Newsted leaving the band and vocalist James Hetfield struggling with alcoholism and going to rehab. Both of these conflicts resulted in the band questioning if they would still be together to even make music.
As you said, "St Anger" was pretty shit. But i'm kinda excited to see what their new album coming up. I do hope they've got the touch back and keep doing more old days like songs :) Ber de bing - 21 Октябрь 2007: When I first listened to St. Anger I was really disappointed. St. Anger came several years later, and I found myself disliking it only because everyOne else hated it. Well, that is a pop-music mentality (just like liking Master of Puppets just because everyOne else does) and I decided to be really different and give this album a second chance. Though I don't think Metallica has ever dOne a true "concept" album, I think this is about the closest they've ever got. Rage pours out of every track, underscored heavily by the resounding "thwang" of Lars Ulrich's prominent snare drum.

2003's "St. Anger" is considered to be Metallica's worst album. production values, in the hopes that Metallica fans might give the songs on St. Anger a fresh listen and re-evaluate what is still a very controversial record. So how does it stack up against the original? Very impressively, in this old-fart Metallica fan's opinion.
