Henderson was also responsible for bringing Louis Armstrong from Chicago to New York in October 1924, thus flipping the focal point of jazz in the history of the United States (although Armstrong left the band in November 1925 and returned to Chicago)  . First Impressions 1924–1931 Vol. 1, Decca Jazz Heritage Series, DL 9227. Swing's the Thing 1931–1934 Vol. 2, Decca Jazz Heritage Series, DL 79228. As arranger for Benny Goodman Orchestra.

Three different periods are represented with two numbers featuring Louis Armstrong in late 1924, seven mostly heated tracks from Henderson's prime in 1926-28 (including hot versions of "Clarinet Marmalade," "Fidgety Feet" and "Sensation") and a few selections (including "Sugar Foot Stomp") from 1931.

The first one to come to my mind is the Fletcher Henderson band and the influence of Don Redman, who was one of his key writers. Don Redman was for Fletcher Henderson as Billy Strayhorn was for Duke Ellington. And of course when you talk about big band influence, you have to include Ellington, who, with Strayhorn, brought in so many new ideas. I thought of including Bob Brookmeyer in Volume I, at least in terms of his later work, which is quite a bit different from what he was writing for the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and the Gerry Mulligan Concert Big Band. Brookmeyer was based in Europe for many years, where he was kept in employment by the European radio orchestras, like many other American writers.
