A powerful, bluesy tenor saxophonist with a full-bodied robust tone, Booker Ervin was a highly regarded figure within musician and jazz aficionado circles but less well known among the general public. Nevertheless, he made a strong impact on any audience that experienced his passionate tenor playing in person. At this July 2nd performance at Freebody Park in Newport, the potent tenorman was joined by 26-year-old Chick Corea (a year away from his encounter with Miles Davis on 1968's Filles de Kilimanjaro ) along with bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Lenny McBrowne.

Booker Ervin had a distinguished career as both leader and sideman. While I wouldn't label him a "giant of jazz" Booker repays careful listening-his artistry is consistently inventive, his voice distinct from the anonymous mainstream. Whether he's playing originals or interpreting standards like "Autumn Leaves" or "Poiniciana", Booker Ervin is sure to impress the discerning listener with his flair for the dramatic, coupled with his lyricism and sense of irony. The final three tracks are from another album Ervin led titled Cookin'. This album was recorded in Newark, NJ on November 26, 1960 for Savoy. Here he is backed by Richard Williams on trumpet, Horace Parlan on piano, George Tucker on bass and Dannie Richmond on drums. This album was recorded for the New Jazz label at Rudy van Gelder's Englewood Cliffs, NJ studio on June 27, 1961.
