Faust (German for "fist") is the debut studio album by the experimental music band Faust. It was released in 1971 on Polydor Records. Although it was never a commercial success, Faust has garnered much acclaim from rock critics.

Just as The Faust Tapes was a massive sampler for the band's Wümme period, Patchwork takes bits and pieces of Faust's music and stitches together a typically disorientating program. However, rather than focus on a particular period, the CD gathers sound from Faust's entire career (1971-2002), perhaps with the intention that, if enough stuff goes in the kettle, nothing recognizable will come out. Because of the sheer oddness of most of the source music, people who've heard anything by the group will have no trouble picking out phrases and textures here and there.

Album · 2002 · 20 Songs. Key players in the Krautrock movement, Faust formed in Germany in 1971 and soon built a devoted fanbase thanks to their wildly unpredictable and artsy freeform style. They released four albums between 1971 and 1975, then disappeared into obscurity for two decades before reemerging in the '90s and continuing to perform and record with various changing lineups.

But Faust definitely should have played this album for someone before they titled it with the years listed. And if you haven't yet, you probably will anyway, no matter what I say. For the non-Faust fan, don't start with this album, please. Start with the their 70s stuff. And when you hunger for more, move on to the 1990s+ stuff. And maybe even this four star album.

Faust – Patchwork 1971-2002. There are familiar moments, such as a fragment of It’s A Rainy Day, Sunshine Girl, but mostly the sounds here run the entire Faust gamut from tentative, acoustic half-ideas to minimal, Triassic riffery to primal electronica from one of rock’s forgotten futures. A good taster for those unfamiliar with the band.
